University of Utah v. Ambry Genetics

On July 9, 2013, Myriad Genetics, along with the University of Utah Research Foundation, Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, HSC Research and Development Limited Partnership, and Endorecherche, Inc. filed lawsuits against Ambry Genetics and Gene by Gene, two laboratories that began or have proposed to begin offering genetic testing of the BRCA 1 and 2 genes.

The challenge was filed on behalf of a domestic violence victim who faced eviction from her home after requesting police protection from an abusive ex-boyfriend.

The complaint alleges that a Florida landlord and management company violated the federal Fair Housing Act’s prohibition on sex and familial status discrimination when they denied her housing application due to her refusal to provide her children’s social security numbers, because doing so would put her family at risk.
