On February 20, 2018, the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵand the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵof Oregon moved to intervene on behalf of Basic Rights Oregon (BRO) in a case about transgender students’ rights. BRO seeks to defend the Dallas School District’s practice of permitting a transgender boy to use the same restrooms and locker rooms as other boys. BRO has spent over 20 years advocating for legal protections for the LGBTQ community in Oregon, and has supported transgender students and families in Dallas and beyond.

On October 20, 2017 the ACLU, the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵof Maryland, and Free State Justice intervened on behalf of James van Kuilenburg, a transgender student, in the case Smith v. Board of Education of Frederick County to defend a Maryland school board’s policies that prevent discrimination, harassment, and stigmatization of transgender and gender nonconforming students in the school system.

The ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵ, the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵof Minnesota, and Stinson Leonard Street LLP filed a motion to intervene on behalf of a transgender student in a lawsuit that seeks to bar trans students from using locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. This case is similar to lawsuits filed around the country that are trying to prevent transgender students from using the locker rooms and restrooms that match their gender identity.

The ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵ, the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵof Illinois, and Mayer Brown LLP filed a motion to intervene on behalf of Students A, B, and C, through their Parents and Legal Guardians, and the Illinois Safe School Alliance. The intervention comes after an effort to reverse an agreement reached between suburban Chicago High School District 211 and the U.S. Department of Education after a complaint filed by Student A, a female student in the District, resulted in her being permitted to use the locker room consistent with her gender identity. The lawsuit, filed by District 211 community members labeling themselves as Students and Parents for Privacy, seeks to block Student A and other transgender students from using restrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with their gender identity.
