Bio

Kary L. Moss is a nationally recognized civil rights leader who has spent her career defending and advancing liberty and justice. She joined the ACLU’s leadership team in 2018 as National Director of Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives after twenty years as Executive Director of the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓÆµof Michigan, where she built one of the nation’s most impactful affiliates.

At the ACLU, Moss leads a department dedicated to strengthening state affiliates, fostering leadership across the network, and ensuring the organization’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She oversees all national office grantmaking to affiliates, including the Southern Collective, a $50 million initiative dedicated to building political and organizational capacity in all the ACLU's southern affiliates.

During her tenure in Michigan, Moss and her team played a pivotal role in uncovering the Flint water crisis, advocated for expanded voting rights through Promote the Vote, and led initiatives supporting African American, Latino, LGBTQ, immigrant, and AMEMSA communities. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including Michiganian of the Year (Detroit News), Crain’s 100 Most Influential Women, the State Bar’s Champion of Justice, and induction into the Women’s Hall of Fame.

A lawyer, teacher, and author, Moss has written extensively on civil rights issues and leadership, with publications including Man Made Medicine: Women’s Health, Public Policy, and Reform (Duke University Press), The Right to Read, the ÌÒ×ÓÊÓÆµGuide to Women’s Rights, and in the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
